Glass used for shoji screens

A shoji is a sliding door with a wooden frame
covered with Japanese paper
, and is a
traditional Japanese fixture.

The washi allows light to softly pass through,
allowing natural light into the room while
maintaining privacy.

Some shoji are fitted with a glass window in the
lower half
in order to enjoy the outside view and
design. Such shoji are called yukimi shoji.

We offer two types of glass used for such yukimi
shoji: glass for shoji (bokashi sansui) and frosted
glass.

Glass for Shoji screens (Bokashi Sansui)

Glass for shoji screens (Bokashi Sansui) is glass for
shoji screens with patterns and gradations.

The glass is characterized by “sansui-ga”
(oriental paintings depicting mountains and
water)
, and we offer a wide variety of designs, 35
in all.

Maximum size 914mm×610mm

customers use a gradation process. By making the
upper half of the glass transparent with gradation
processing
, You can enjoy the view outside with
the shoji closed.

Laminated glass with Japanese paper / glass reproducing Japanese paper

Washi is paper made with traditional Japanese
techniques.
Made mainly from plant fibers such
as kozo (paper mulberry), mitsumata (mitsumata),
and gampi (gampi), washi is characterized by an
uneven, soft texture compared to Western paper.

Because of its ability to regulate humidity and
softly diffuse light, washi has long been an
indispensable part of traditional Japanese
interior decorations
such as shoji screens,
fusuma sliding doors, and folding screens.

We offer two types of glass that reproduce such
Japanese paper: “Washi glass (Japanese style
glass)” and “Design film glass.

Glass used in Japanese houses during the Showa period

Glass became widely used for windows, sliding
doors, and shoji screens in Japan during the
Taisho and Showa periods.

Glass windows made it easier to let light into the
house, thus realizing the “bright and open space”
that is a characteristic of Japanese houses.

In the early Showa period, not only transparent
glass, but also glass with a pattern on one side,
such as “molded plate glass,” which allows
light to pass through while maintaining privacy,
were widely used.

The “Showaigataita-glass” and “Showa Retro
glass” that we offer reproduce the patterns and
textures of such glass that was popular in
Japanese houses during the Showa period.

Showa figured glass

Showa figured glass is glass with a pattern on one
side. It is made by reproducing patterns that were
popular in the early Showa period.

Until now, traditional glass had an image of being
“thin and cold. However, Showa figured glass is up
to 5 mm thick and can be processed as “double
glazing (pair processing),” which improves
thermal insulation,
so it is widely used for
window glass in houses and inns.

We offer a wide variety of designs, 13 in all.

Maximum size 800mm×1800mm

Showa Retro Glass

Showa Retro Glass is a “fluctuating” glass with a
slightly wavy surface.

By creating a fluctuating surface, the glass
reproduces the handmade glass of the olden days.
It gives a sense of nostalgia and warmth that
cannot be achieved with mass-produced glass.

Because it can be processed as double glazing
(pair processing), which improves thermal
insulation, it is also used for large windows of
old private homes and inns.
